Licensing & Updates
How the Mosaic license works: a perpetual license you own forever, a one-year update window, a two-year security guarantee, upgrades, renewals, and device management.
Licensing & Updates
Mosaic is a buy-once app, not a subscription. Here is exactly what you get, in plain terms.
What you own
When you buy Standard ($79) or Pro ($149) you get a perpetual license. The version you install is yours forever — it keeps working whether or not you ever pay again. Your entitlements are verified locally against a signed token, so Mosaic runs offline day to day; it only needs a network connection to re-check your license periodically (roughly monthly), not every launch.
Activation
Mosaic is paid-only — there's no free tier or trial. On first launch you enter the license key from your purchase email to unlock the app on that device; until then the app shows an activation screen. This is the only time activation gates you:
- Activate — a fresh install (or a device that's never been activated) asks for your key.
- Reactivate — after a very long time offline the local check can lapse; you re-enter your key and you're back. You still own Mosaic — nothing was lost.
- Renew — only appears if you manually install a build newer than your update window; the version included with your license keeps working, and renewing unlocks the newer build.
A lapsed update window never locks you out — see the two clocks below. The only thing that removes access is a refund or chargeback: that revokes the license, and the app returns to the activation screen once the device next re-checks (which can take up to ~30 days offline).
Two clocks (this is the whole model)
There are two separate things with dates on them. Keep them apart and everything else makes sense.
- Your tier — Standard or Pro. Perpetual. You own it once and keep it.
- Your update window — how long you receive new versions. Time-based, and renewable.
Buying a license includes one year of feature updates. Every new release we ship during that year — patch, minor, or major — is yours to install. When the year ends, your installed version keeps working forever; you just stop receiving newer feature releases until you renew.
The two-year security guarantee
Independently of your update window, we provide security and compatibility fixes for at least 24 months from your purchase date — even if you never renew. We treat this as the "reasonably expectable" update period required by EU consumer law (Directive (EU) 2019/770, Art. 8, and Hungarian Government Decree 373/2021 § 17(4)), and we apply it to everyone.
So: feature updates for a year (renewable), security fixes for at least two years, no matter what.
Renewing your updates
Renewal is optional and only ever buys more updates — never access.
| Tier | Renewal |
|---|---|
| Standard | $39 / year |
| Pro | $59 / year |
Renewal is renew-from-today, no penalty: if you let your window lapse and come back later, the new year starts the day you renew — you don't pay for the gap. Renew from Settings → License in the app, or from your account page.
Upgrading Standard → Pro
You can move from Standard to Pro at any time by paying the difference ($70) — you don't re-buy Pro at full price. Upgrading changes your tier immediately and does not reset or shorten your update window; the two clocks stay independent. If your update window has already lapsed, the upgrade still gives you Pro on the versions you're entitled to; renew if you also want the latest build.
Devices
One license covers up to 3 devices. You can move a license to a new machine anytime — deactivate a device to free its slot from Settings → License in the app, or manage all your devices from your account page. Routine OS reinstalls and hardware swaps within the 3-device count are free.
What happens when a newer version comes out after my window
The app checks for updates as usual. If a new release is within your update window, it offers it normally. If it's newer than your window, the app tells you a new version exists and offers to renew — it won't silently push a version you're not entitled to, and it never disables the version you already have. Security releases still come through under the two-year guarantee.
